  8. During his career, Emil, who was from 
  9. Czechoslovakia, set 18 world records. In the 
  10. 1948 Games, Emil won the gold medal in
  11. the 10,000 meters and the silver in the 5,000. 
  12. Four years later, he became the first runner
  13. in 40 years to win the gold in both the 5,000-
  14. meter and 10,000-meter runs at the same 
  15. Olympics. But that wasn't enough for Emil, 
  16. and he decided to try the marathon, too.
  17. The fact that he had never run a marathon 
  18. before didn't bother him.
